The Brief
East Lothian Council, committed to sustainability and the reduction of carbon emissions, identified the need to empower its Economic Development Advisers to guide local small businesses in their carbon management efforts. In response to this, East Lothian Council partnered with Tomson Consulting to conduct a workshop focusing on Carbon Management for Small Businesses.

Methodology
Tomson Consulting designed a workshop tailored to address the practical aspects of carbon management. The key components of the workshop included:
1. Carbon Management Fundamentals:
An overview of essential concepts related to carbon management, greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, climate change and their impact on businesses.
2. Legislation and Policy:
?Detailed explanations of relevant international, UK, and Scotland-specific carbon reduction policies and legislation, ensuring participants were well-informed about the regulatory landscape.
3. Carbon Management Principal Process:
A structured process for implementing carbon management.
4. Real-Life Examples of GHG Inventory:
Practical, real-world examples of greenhouse gas inventories to help participants understand the process and importance of such documentation.
5. Introducing the Value of Carbon:
The workshop introduced the economic aspects of carbon management, including the UK Emissions Trading Scheme and the UK Government's guidance for evaluating public policies, investments, and projects.
6. Real-Life Examples of Carbon and Cost Savings:
Participants were exposed to practical case studies showcasing the cost savings achieved through successful carbon management projects, emphasising the tangible benefits.
7. Carbon Management Support:
The workshop introduced available resources and support mechanisms, such as the Annual Investment Allowance and the Business Energy Scotland SME Loan/Grant Scheme, to help small businesses initiate and sustain their carbon management initiatives.
